ARH Announces 2004 Frist Humanitarian Award Recipients
May 12, 2004

Virgil Woodie, Director of Dietary Services and Marvin Nida, Hospital Volunteer were recently awarded Alleghany Regional Hospital’s 2004 Frist Humanitarian Award as Employee and Volunteer of the Year respectively. The Frist Humanitarian Award, is one of the highest honors an employee or volunteer can earn within HCA, the parent company of Alleghany Regional Hospital. The Frist Humanitarian Awards were created to recognize employees and volunteers at HCA facilities who demonstrate extraordinary concern for the welfare and happiness of patients and their community. The Humanitarian Awards are given annually in recognition of the humanitarian spirit and philanthropic work of the late Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Sr., a founder of Hospital Corporation of America, the predecessor company of HCA.

According to his nomination, Virgil Woodie “quietly goes about doing good without being asked or seeking recognition. Although it is not common knowledge among his co-workers and staff, Virgil anonymously provides gifts and monetary donations to those in need. He is also a lay-reader and Sunday school teacher in his church where he is an active member. In addition to his charitable giving he gives 100% in his daily duties as the Director of Dietary Services. He goes above and beyond to provide quality service in his cafeteria. Virgil is truly deserving of the Frist Humanitarian Award.”

For the 2004 Frist Humanitarian Award for a hospital volunteer, Marvin Nida’s nomination perfectly sums up why he is deserving of this award, “Marvin is always so happy and willing to help anyone who needs it, even though he may not feel well himself. Marvin gives 100% to any volunteer position he takes on.” In addition to his volunteer work at ARH, Marvin also devotes time and energy to the Red Cross and area blood mobiles, and Meals on Wheels. As another nomination for Marvin states: “I know he doesn’t volunteer for the glory, but for the satisfaction of helping others daily.”

The Frist Humanitarian Award was created in 1971 to honor outstanding individuals for their humanitarian and volunteer activities. Named in honor of Dr. Thomas F. Frist Sr. (1910 – 1998), this award recognizes individuals whose daily dedication and care giving epitomize the highest standards of quality and personal commitment.
